Young people during their adolescence phase tend to be against the wishes of their parents and challenge their authority. They rebel and do not accept any of their advice. They feel they are grown ups and know better what to do. Parents have a difficult time convincing them that their advice is valuable and that on account of their experience, they know better what is good for them. It is obvious that parents are necessary for the healthy growth of the child.
What role do parents play?
Parents have a major responsibility in ensuring that their children grow up well and adjust to the society norms. Usually, any maladjustment on the part of the individual is on account of parents not paying much attention to their children in their formative years. In the West, parents are concerned about the welfare of their children up to a certain age and after that their child once in his or her 20s becomes an adult and leads his or her own life. On the other hand in the East parents continue to give support financial as well as emotional to their children if he or she is a grown up person and having a family of his or her own. In the urban areas in the East the situation is changing in some sections of the society, particularly among the well-to-do who are trying to take their own independent decisions and not depending upon others.
What kind of role do parents play in the upbringing of the child?
- Parents advise their child to keep good company and learn good mannerisms that would keep up their self–esteem.
- They inculcate in them good habits and a healthy ego.
- Parents play a vital role in the mental and physical growth of the child. They ensure that the child has good food, thus maintaining nutrition levels that the body requires and also encourage them to participate in games to build their bodies.
- Parents are also responsible that their parent receives proper education. They send them to best schools and colleges and try to ensure that they lead a better life as compared to theirs. They guide them as to what course they must pursue at college.
- Peer group pressure often may lead a child into bad company. Parents have to  counsel them that they must try to move around those who will enrich their personality rather than get them into bad habits such as drinking and taking drugs.
- On the home front a healthy atmosphere has to be created that will encourage the child to pursue interesting hobbies and also in the future an interesting career of his or her liking.
- Parents also have to inculcate values and ethics in their child. Whatever they preach to their child, they also must practice. The child learns about the ways of the world from their parents. A well behaved child reflects the values upheld by his or her parents.
- Parents are necessary for the child in every sense of the term. An orphan for instance is deprived of parental love and care.
International organizations such as UNICEF ensure that the parents ensure that their child is provided with necessary food, clothing and shelter to ensure a secure life for the child.
